Our signature 'Finding Your Ground' is an 8-week trauma-sensitive group yoga program targeted at improving mental health and well-being for women.
Trauma-sensitive yoga uses invitational language to invite movement and offer choices on how to move the body which helps participants to notice sensations from within, increase agency and regulate emotions. By doing so, it may help alleviate some symptoms of psychological distress associated with:
The Finding Your Ground program invites up to 8 participants to practice yoga within a closed group setting which helps to foster social connections and a sense of safety. The program design and methodology consist of a weekly 75-minute trauma-sensitive yoga session which includes a brief psychoeducation component on self-care for health and mental health.
Eligibility criteria:
- Between 18 - 65 years old
- Currently live in the Illawarra or Shoalhaven
- Identify as female or non-binary
- Priority will be given to those with lived experience of violence, abuse and/or coercive control
The 2024 program was funded by the Shoalhaven City Council in partnership with the Shoalhaven Suicide Prevention Awareness Network (SSPAN)
The 2025-2026 program is funded by One Door Mental Health Illawarra Clubhouse and is free of charge to participants.

It will be a hybrid of slow moving forms, stretching and breathing exercises with props and chairs provided. Suitable for people with limited or no prior experience in yoga. For those who are curious, the styles are a mix of vinyasa, hatha, yin and yoga nidra using a trauma-sensitive approach.
A yoga session that feels welcoming and movement that is choice-based and gentle. A space that is safe and free from judgement, led by a faciliator who is professionally trained in mental health and domestic violence work.
All yoga props will be provided for use but you are welcome to bring your own and maybe a bottle of water. Please wear clothing that will allow your body to move comfortably. Shoes are not required.
It is suitable for most abilities. However, please check with your primary health care provider for advice. The building is wheelchair accessible and there are free on-street parking available. If you have specific requirements or restrictions, please contact us to discuss further.
Yoga is scientifically proven to be beneficial for both physical and mental health. When practiced with a trauma-sensitive method in a group setting, it can offer the person a mind and body approach towards well-being, resilience and healing.
